Kaliluni AB – Kenya

This exquisite Kenyan coffee comes from the Kaliluni Factory washing station, the sole washing station run by the Kaliluni Farmer Cooperative Society in the Machakos county of Kenya. Machakos is one of the largest counties in the country, and although commonly considered “eastern” Kenya, it’s right by Nairobi and borders some of Kenya's oldest coffee producing areas. With high altitudes and excellent production, coffee from this area is typically clean and vibrant.

Kaliluni Farmer Cooperative Society (FCS) is a producer group under the umbrella of the Machakos Cooperative Union, an organization that represents 28 societies in the county, offering benefits to its members such as farmer training, marketing, and subsidized farm supplies.

The coffee we’ve selected is from a secondary harvest just after the rainy season, meaning the fruits are smaller but the flavours are just as juicy and complex. It underwent a classic washed process, meaning freshly picked coffee cherries were pulped (had their fruit removed) and soaked in tanks of water. After soaking overnight, the beans are rinsed before being dried on raised beds. An ample water supply in many of the Kenyan growing regions means the coffees can be washed thoroughly, yielding a high quality, clean production.
