La Macarena – Colombia

La Macarena was founded with the goal of using meticulous production, innovative processing, and exotic varieties to produce the best coffee in Colombia. Oscar Riascos, a Colombian specialty coffee producer co-owns the farm with his brother, Darwin, and Wilton Benitez, an acclaimed Colombian coffee producer known for pushing innovation in processing and creating some of the worlds best coffees. Together the producers created a company, Varietals Finos, which oversees two neighbouring farms, La Macerena as well as Granja Paraiso 92.

The lot we have today is something that the farm specializes in: an exotic varietal processed exceptionally. This coffee is a Gesha varietal. The origins of Gesha trace back to Ethiopia but then found remarkable success when planted in the Americas. People all over the world prize Gesha for its complex and lush flavour profile often with beautiful floral and fruity notes. But Gesha is difficult to grow. Not only is it more susceptible to plant diseases, the trees themselves yield less fruit and require more space than other varieties, meaning more work and less yield for farmers.
Still, people are willing to pay a premium to experience the delicate and unique cup quality that Gesha offers. We are super excited to be able to share this Gesha with you, processed in a way to let the varietal and terroir shine through, we hope you enjoy this wonderful coffee!
